Cheap Flights can be tricky to track down, but there are ways other than the luck of the draw. While the dream is to do a quick Google search for our place of departure and arrival and be presented with a once in a lifetime deal, it usually requires a little bit more tact than that.
Check out these 5 ways to find cheap tickets.
Check and Check Often
Though this is a fairly random way of tracking down cheap tickets, giving yourself a good amount of planning time will allow you to track pricing trends. Airline prices will rise and fall on a daily basis due to a number of reasons. The important thing is to check regularly and be willing to pull the trigger when the price (and route details) suit your criteria.
Be Mindful of Holidays
Holidays such as Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving mean big lines, busy flights and skyrocketing prices for flights in western countries. Whenever possible, book flights during the “shoulder seasons” when demand is low. However, this can work in reverse when flying to eastern countries that celebrate a different set of holidays. For example, when travelling to China, try to avoid the week of the Lunar New Year, while travelling to Islamic countries one is best to avoid the days surrounding Eid al-Fitr. Learn more!
Second Opinion for Cheap Flights
Most travel agency online services will offer the “best rates of anywhere on the internet.” It’s a little like “the world’s best cup of coffee” at this point. Don’t believe everything you read. Do your due diligence in investigating the competitors, or go straight to the airline’s website to get the news right from the source. In addition to this tactic, these sites will often try to rush your hand with statements like, “24 other people are looking at this deal right now.” This is mostly nonsense. Give yourself time to be patient and wary of online cheap flights aggregators.
Charter Companies and One-Ways
Let’s say your trip is somewhat last minute and the exact length is still unknown to you. The following two ways to save on flights are a little unorthodox, but may apply to you.
Last Minute Charters- Although not always the case, charter airlines can sometimes offer heavily discounted airfares close to the date of departure. This will require some digging on your part, but you may find a seat the airline is desperately trying to unload at the last minute.
–Check One Way Tickets- Again, not a surefire bet, but some routes offered through certain airlines allow you to save a ton of money by opting for a one-way ticket. Of course, check the ticket situation on the way back; the money you save on the way there you could be paying (and some) on the way back.
Finding cheap flights is always on our mind, but not always in the cards, but using these methods will greatly increase your chance of finding one. It may require a bit of flexibility on your part, but if saving money is your bottom line it will be a small price to pay. As always, when looking at airline tickets online, use your best judgement.
